A BIT OF SOUTH BANK CC HISTORY
THE CHAIRMAN'S CENTENARY MESSAGE BY DOUG MUMFORD
1892 to 1992. 100 years without a break. for not only did the Club survive two world wars but managed throughout those ten turbulent years to arrange and play fixtures.
For any particular centenary only about 65% of those with that Centenary can celebrate it therefore let us, in celebrating Centenary, not forget all those others who the Club and formed its traditions.
100 years in playing terms something like 12,000 games.150,000 selections from 2,500 members and one year of selection and committee meetings. All the records up to the last war were lost during that war and as we have not a club that has kept playing records you cannot be beguiled with playing statistics.
From its foundation in 1892 up to 1973 the Club was the Borough Polytechnic, then in that year, due to the re—organisation and change in status of the Polytechnics. its name was changed to South Bank Polytechnic. Throughout these years the Club has maintained a close relationship with the Polytechnic that has enabled us to recruit many Students and not a fow staff into the Club. The Club had various home grounds until 1910 when it moved into its present home in Turney Road (now Dulwich Sports Ground DSG) which until 1933 it shared with Old Westminster Citizens.
Within a few years of its foundation the Club was running three Saturday sides and one Sunday side and, except for the war years. has Continued to do so. Because of the Polytechnic's conscientious objections to Sunday sport. the Sunday team until 1948 was a wandering side under the name of Herne Hill Wanderers.
Prior to 1950 the Club was dry. though certainly not the members and for much of that time the watering hole was the Crown and Greyhound - The Dog - in the village. In that the Polytechnic, after of representations, gave in and the ground was duly The first bar was half a Nissen hut (an ex barrage balloon billet). tte other half the groundsman's tractor garage. From the Nissen hut the bar moved via a purpose-built bar (now groundsman's premises) to its present position in the Pavilion.
Club cricket was played until 1970 when we opted to play league cricket and joined the SW London League. In 1977 we joined the North Kent league and next year 1993 we shall joining the Surrey County League.
From handed down recollections it would seem that the Club soon established itself and by the turn of the century was fairly strong. and by the late Twenties had developed into a club of some standing and ability. Certainly from the 1930's to IW) it was very strong with a notable number of players of distinction and in spite of a scheme to attract good youngsters, standards declined until 1980. Initiated by an influx of able students in 1980 and subsequently, with a number of other players of note, standards are on the way up.
Any club that has nourished for years is not without its characters, and this Club is no exception. Apart from space limitations. it would be invidious to name names but when chatting about "all our memories'" spare a thought and a few words for all those players and Officers whose performances and adminstrative abilities have got us to today and on to tomorrow.
